  • Flowers appear in summer
  • Male flowers are small, pale-yellow to white, and on erect catkins attached to the base of each leaf
  • Female flowers are 3 mm long at the base of some catkins
  • Fruit is a golden-colored 2-3 cm cupule with many sharp spines
  • Each cupule contains 1 ovoid shiny dark brown seed
