  • Deciduous
  • Aromatic leaves are pinnately compound and alternate, grow to 6-12 inches, with 7-9 leaflets
  • Leaves are broadly elliptical, shiny and yellowish-green on top and pale green on bottom
  • Leaves have hairy undersides
  • Monecious with male dropping catkins in clusters of 3 from one stalk and very small female flowers in clusters of 2-5 near tip of twig
  • Produces 1-2 inch rounded nuts with a thick husk which are green at first and turn brown later
  • Develops into big, towering, straight growing tree, sometimes over 100 feet
