• Leaves are 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches long, elliptical with acute tip and thick, leathery wedge base
• Leaves are dark green on top and dull gray on bottom
• Leaves have smooth margins that are often turned under, and hairy undersides
• Acorns occur in pairs, are dark brown egg shaped, 5/8 to 1 inch long, with 1/3 enclosed in a scaly, whitish grey cup
• Male flowers are green hanging catkins
• Grows in scrub habitat
