  • Evergreen conifer that can reach about 30 feet
  • Subcanopy tree
  • Open crown and conical shape with whorled branches
  • Branches are spreading to slightly droopy
  • Needles are stiff and needle-like and arranged in two ranks on the branches
  • Leaves are glossy green on top and light green on bottom
  • When crushed, the leaves have a strong, unpleasant, resinous odor
  • Dioecious; male and female reproductive structures on different trees
  • Male cones are 5-7 cm long grouped in lines along the underside of the shoot
  • Female cones, when young, are tiny and more angular than the male cones, and are in groups of 2-5 near the tip of a branchlet
  • Female cones mature to a drupe with a single large nut seed surrounded completely by a fleshy covering (aril), 2.5-3.8 cm
  • Green aril turns orange or purple in late fall
